Souvenirs from Crete, GREECE

I've been in Crete this summer and had a wonderful time. Among other places, hotel Doma was very interesting from a hobbyist point of view. There's an ancient safe at the entrance, many old keys and an old padlock hanging on the breakfast room wall, and there is an Italian safe in every room!

Since the keys are still in use, I blurred the room number on the tag, so nobody can file down a key like the one in the picture and go there and open "my" room.

I bought a couple of lock as souvenir, will post pictures next week.

Cheers :)

Re: Souvenirs from Crete, GREECE

I also noticed there are many postal boxes, some of them are pretty standard, with a master key that seems a lever one used by the postman and many wafer locks used by the single box owners.

And then there are less standard ones... locked in different ways.

Another place I stayed at for a few nights had a drawer full of locks in my room (a room usually used by the owners, but it was high season). Since these were not mine I haven't touched them, but it was a bit weird to sleep in a room with so many locks in a drawer.

Cheers :)

It's always fun to see what other locks and keys are used around the world.

Beautiful keys and safes, femurat.

While I agree about not playing with locks that are not yours, a drawer full of them... It would have been a temptation of leave them all picked.

Thank you for sharing!

Nice, very nice, thanks for sharing.
I met a very similar safe on my way in your Homeland Femurat :) It seems Mediterranean people have a knack for making these.

Re: Souvenirs from Crete, GREECE

I'm happy you all like the pictures :)

Thanks a lot for the open safe pictures ringo. The safe was closed and there was just the one key you see in it. I guess nobody have seen it open in a long time. I was hoping to find some pictures of the inside and you saved me the trouble to look for them.
I saw the picture of your safe ARF-GEF, I agree it looks quite similar to this one.

I think that the locks in the drawer were the old rooms locks. The property was quite close to the shore, so locks suffer from salt and sand contact and may need to be changed after some time. So there were some old one and some new ones in boxes.
I was very very tempted to play with them but I choose not to, I strongly believe in our ethics. Those were very common Italian locks and I have a couple of similar ones at home, so it was not that difficult to resist.

Cheers :)
