3M lock?

Here's an interesting lock I saved from a rekey job. It looks like it has a 3M or sideways M with another M

It came out of some kind of nightlatch lock with a built in security alarm

The trim ring (I can't quite make out what it says)

I found the lock interesting but wasn't able to find any information about the type of lock

Any Ideas?

Cool. Never saw one of those... looks like it has a Corbin keyway.

The code is hidden in the tumblers. One position opens the lock, another position opens one of these doors...

Re: 3M lock?

Have your trie4d shooting a mail at 3M and asking them if they ever ventured into lockmaking (it was a huge company fora while) or more likely, had some lock specially branded for them.
Knowing how protective these firms are wit their name they might easily know which other companies use this name..
At least it's worth the 3 minutes of writing the mail.
And pelase if you find anything out, let us know :)

Re: 3M lock?

Three M, the company that makes sandpaper I use, and post it notes scotch tape and many other things,
Minnesota Mining and Manufacturing is the basis for the name,
I believe that they were once in the alarm business, and hired an old burglar, who was around at the time of Al Capone, he went by the name Red Rudinsky or rudy rudinsky or some such, he had been in prison and was used by the warden as a prison locksmith, or some such story, his lockpicks are said to be at the Minnesota Historical Museum, but I got obfuscation from the clerks there when I went one time decades ago to ask to see them.

His name and story are on the internet, probably google 3m corp rudinsky or something like that. he went straight and helped design alarms then retired.

Re: 3M lock?

I just googled the old 3M logo, I think it matches my lock.

I also just sent 3M a email too, I'll see if I get a response

Re: 3M lock?

My email response from 3M

"3M was in the Alarm business for a short time in the 1970s or 1980s. Because we were in the business for a very short time and so long ago, no information exists on any of the products or systems we may have had. "

Re: 3M lock?

Wow, they couldn't even narrow it down to the decade. Long enough ago its unlikely there are any old timers who still work for the company, and were involved in that division back then who might be able to give you some real answers.

For business reasons I'd imagine a corp like that does have some archives from those days, but buried so deep in a basement file room that no one wants to be bothered with finding them just to answer a simple email request.

Sounds like an interesting little slice of lock/security history you got yourself there. Definitely a keeper.
