"Inner Tite" barrel lock and key! With pics

This is a lock used on utility boxes, meters, valves etc by local gas/water/electric utilities:
Image

The "key" is the red handled part, and it fits in the small hole on the lock. When the key is inserted and the handle folded down it pulls a spring back inside the plug and retracts two ball bearings. Here's the plug removed and the open lock:

Here's the tip of the "key" showing how the end spreads out when the handle is folded down:

Here are all the parts separately:

The key isn't the exact one for this lock, I had to file it down so it would fit the hole. If you find the actual "Inner Tite" or "Highfield" brand keys on Ebay, they are usually over $45-$50! I paid like $25 for mine, and got the lock from a utility lineman.

Here's Inner Tite's website:
http://www.inner-tite.com/

Some of their locks are quite advanced!, and they only sell to utilities and cable/phone companies, so the stuff is hard to get!

Ebay search words: "inner tite key" "highfield key" "inner tite" "barrel lock key" "meter key" "channell key"

Have fun!

Phoneman, thanks for the pictures and explanation. I've seen those keys on ebay for some time now and always wondered what kind of lock they fit and how they worked. Prett simple but unique process. Mark

Thanks for posting this!
I looked at the one on my gas meter almost every time I mowed my lawn...It made mowing less of a chore when I was thinking of something else. Sadly, now that I know how they work I'll have to find something else to wonder about when mowing next summer. Thanks a lot

Interesting lock. That is quite the vintage keyboard you have there. I bet those keys sound like a typewriter!

They're not as complex as they look, that's for sure! And not something I've seen on here yet either.
Xeo, the keyboard isn't as old as it looks, just a 90's Compaq. I wish it was one of those heavy ass IBM "clackers", as you can't kill em!

Excellent post, a utility lock AND key.
Not something we usually see here.
Thanks for the detailed pictures.

Glad you like it guys! I haven't seen much on these, as I'd guess there aren't alot of specimens that are easily obtainable. Where I live, they usually only use these on meters where theft of service is a problem, and on some 3 phase meters due to the higher voltage.
On another note, the ground level (pad mounted) distribution transformers and substation gates use Best brand padlocks.
