Master speed dial lock

I bought this lock at Rona because I was curious about how it worked.

There are two "security" type screws plus one of those screws shaped so it can only be tightened. 5 minutes with a 1/16 inch drill fixed that, and I removed it with a standard slot screwdriver. My iFixit screwdriver kit had the right screwdriver to remove the little triangle screws.

This actuator has four posts which move some plastic wheels in the lock housing. It's interesting to note that two wheels are moved at once.

It blows me away how people can come up with something like this then design it.

I think it is a masterpiece - the design - pity you can open them with a tap of a hammer.

In fact, three wheels are moving at once - the one right under the plate at the side you have moved it to, too

Truly ingenious mechanism. But I would like more rugged construction, and some mechanism improvements to utilize all possible wheel position combinations.

Are you sure about that? I mean I'm assuming you're talking about doing a "double-tap" from both sides like you would on a good 'ol Number 3? Looking at the design of these locks it doesn't look like it would be vulnerable to any sort of attack like that. No springy bits or anything like that. The ONLY way to get that bar to move is if the fence can rotate into the gates... At least as far as I can see...

Now given that it's plastic gates, I'd imagine a good blow to the top straight down against the shackle would probably pop it open... But it would be destructive, not non-destructive like the double-tap.

Got it! Yeah, you know, for as well engineered as this thing is, you'd think at the very least they would have made the gates metal. I suppose once again the almighty buck won out. A lot cheaper to do injection molding of a part like that versus die-casting.
