Ace Padlock Made by Abus???

Hello folks,

I received a package yesterday within which was an Ace brass padlock which we all know is junk and it is but what struck me was the stamp on top of the lock under the shackle. The stamp reads Abus China. I knew that Abus farms out to China but what does Ace have to do with it? Isnt Ace the hardware store? Anyone know anything on this?

Re: Ace Padlock Made by Abus???

Abus would have private labeled them for ACE Hardware. Mystery solved :)

It hasn't got the usual Abus keyway.

Re: Ace Padlock Made by Abus???

According to a quick search the logo on the lock was used from 1960 to 1970.
macgng; it's completely unnecessary to have ~15$ in keys for a 50¢ lock ... but we all do it anyway :P

Then I must destroy it and we must never speak of this ever again. The people can not know that a company like Abus makes junk locks haha

If that's the case, I'd better destroy my dubious-quality Abus 45/45 laminated as well...just to be safe  .

Actually , Abus has a keyway like that for padlocks.
Silca blank reference for this one is AB17R.

Re: Ace Padlock Made by Abus???

It still boogles my mind how a client (Ace) comes to a big shot (Abus) asking to make them a lock and Abus accepts the job making a decent brass lock but putting zero security pins. Unless of course the client asked for their most cheapest lock which in turn would explain why Abus sent it to china.

Hat doffed to Werewolf there!

It might be considered cheating, but not every Abus padlock has security pins...

Re: Ace Padlock Made by Abus???

Yeah, I think it's just like Jeff mentioned.
They couple with some other lock brands.

My local ACE hardware has a couple padlocks like this too.
One is an American lock. A 5200. But has 'Ace' on the side of it.
They also have a couple with Kwikset keyways. Also labeled Ace.

Re: Ace Padlock Made by Abus???

Just take a look at all the evidence... If that Ace Logo is from the 60's & 70's.... Had Abus even outsourced to china back then?

IMHO, its just some typically unscrupulous Chinese manufacturer that has slapped a couple of well known brand logos on a piece of crap for the export market and has nothing to do with either brand.
