Real deal or fake

I got this at an antique mall this weekend for $20. I have found fake locks at this place before but did not know enough to tell if this was the real deal or not. Any help would be great. The key looks to be poorly cast and the internals look way healthier than the exterior. For twenty bucks though I thought I would give it a shot.

Thanks for taking a look at it. Do you have a guess at what it is worth? There is such a variety of these things my research has led me to the conclusion that it is some place between $45 and 85$. A fairly wide spread.

Re: Real deal or fake

The lock is real, to my knoweldge but the key may not be original. I very often see antique locks with keys that have been made to fit/work so this may be the case. As for worth, I have been watching these locks for months now on ebay and as far as I seen they sell for $15-30 on average of course of it has a patent date and key then its $30+/-. I seen one like this with key stamped UPRR sell for around $30-40 (if I remember correctly) so I am not sure how valuable the PCRR is but the UPRR had lots of people interested.

Re: Real deal or fake

You know after you mentioned that about the key I went and looked at the pics again. In the first picture (the front of the lock) rust pattern indicates that the key had the door held open for some time during storage. Most likely stored with the key in it, which is how I found it at the shop. Interesting.
