Upside down plug in lock?

The lock was like this when I found it in the junk box and thought I might as well try and bring it home and fix it so can anyone help me out?

Re: Upside down plug in lock?

You should be able to tension it slightly and push the pins up into the bible with a pick and then turn the plug around to the right position.

Yeah I have been trying that but it seems stuck. Maybe all the spools are screwing it up?

I've had decent luck with the back side of a half diamond. You don't really need tension wrench either, just press all the pins down then push sideways.

Yeah I do the same if the plug is not inside the padlock but it doesn't seem to work when the core is actually in the lock. The first two pins can be pushed down and then everything else doesn't want to move.

Re: Upside down plug in lock?

That seem odd, could it have been damaged by somebody else trying to fix it before you got it? Maybe a spool jammed up causing too much bind on the rest? I'd try spraying some Free All in there and trying to get some pins moving.

Re: Upside down plug in lock?

Seems like someone picked the padlock and rotated the plug too far causing the drivers to drop into the rekey holes in the bottom of the plug?

Try:

1. Lube
2. Putting it in the freezer for 30 minutes (lower temperatures compresses material)
3. Pushing pins up with a tensioner and turning the plug
4. Tensioning it and picking it
5. Shimming?
6. Feeling each pin 1 by 1, how do they feel?
7. Shim/bypass the lock open to pop the shackle and try dropping the core?
8. Pushing in the shackle while doing all of the above (sometimes works)

Re: Upside down plug in lock?

Perhaps turn the lock so that the bible is on the bottom and they keypins are on top then use something like a comb pick to press down all the top pins at the same time?

Pin 1, 2, 4 and 5 seem to just go up and down but pin three doesn't move at all. I think that is what the problem is.

Re: Upside down plug in lock?

Use the bottom edge of your half diamond to press down 1/2, then take your short hook and push down pin 4/5 (as deep as you can with the tip) and try to jiggle/press down the 3rd with the inner curve of the hook.

Re: Upside down plug in lock?

I would dare to say that if this is a key retaining padlock, you can't turn it back to 12:00 no matter how much picking you do. best and easiest scenario I can see is to carefully drill that retaining nut on the bottom, and just replace it. I'm sure one of us can donate that small part to you! :)

I have been trying to get this open for a while with no luck so I am doing it that way. The lock will die! Well at least the retaining nut will.

Re: Upside down plug in lock?

Maybe the key pins are trapped in the rekeying holes. Have you tried to push down the drivers after shaking the lock and hitting the workbench down? this could free a trapped keypin.

Good luck :)
