corbin combination padlock locked

i got this padlock from a customer who managed to lock it in the closed position like this:

I tried the pull-rotate wheels thing but with no success, does it work if the lock is in this "configuration"?
Do i have to stop as soon as the wheel starts to get harder to rotate or shoul i ortate it more?

Any help would be appreciated!
Thanks in advance and have fun,
Andrea

Re: corbin combination padlock locked

If you're not having much luck manipulating it, you could try decoding it. I'm not familiar with that exact model, but I would think it should work.

Running through the center of each wheel is a rod. Somewhere on the radius of each of these rods is a groove. The goal is to align all these grooves. Some locks have such sloppy tolerances that you can do this visually by just looking along the side of each wheel as you rotate it.

If you're unable to see anything, you could try using a very thin piece of metal as a 'feeler' to detect the groove. Some thin feeler gage works good. Just cut the end to a point (not a really sharp point... leave a very small flat area at the very tip). Slide it down along side each wheel and turn it until you detect the groove. You can either go by feel, or, take a depth measurement on each 'click', and note where the feeler gage drops in farthest.

Once you've aligned all the grooves, try opening. No go? Then rotate all the wheels one click in the same direction and try again. Continue rotating all the wheels in the same direction, one incriment at a time, and try to open each time. If all the grooves were aligned to start with, and you kept them that way as you rotated them.... somewhere within one full revolution the lock should open.

It's a very simple process that I've probably just complicated the shit out of...lol. Search youtube, I'm sure there's a vid out there on it. I beleive Kokomolock's got one.

Re: corbin combination padlock locked

It's open! Thnak you boys!

@ Mister Sour:

i'm out of shims, I was going to go out and buy a can of something to make one,but I managed to decode it
Anyway, since I'm out of other stuff, I will still buy that can

@Oldfast:
I shone a bright light on the top of the padlock and was (barely) able to see a change in the reflection of the light while rotating the wheels, the body of the padlock and the wheels fit very tight.
Once done for all the wheels, I started rotating them one step at the time until it popped open.
by the way,the feeler method was very clearly explained,i'll try that one too.
Thank you you both, I keep learning, and this feels good!

Now I look at every lock I see around in a different way... "could I pick it?" "I wonder how many spools are in there" "if only I had my short hook with me"....

Darkhorse is spot on indeed... lol. What do I cuddle up to at night? It's usually a choice between brass or steel.
Not nearly as warm as a woman... but certainly less complicated :D
