Liberty safe: have combination does not work

I found this site by trying to figure out how to "pick" my safe. I have the combination and it does not work. I only open it once a year or so and its around 15 years old.

I have a Liberty Safe with the S&G mechanical combination lock. It is a Harley Branded safe. The safe is more for decoration then for safe keeping of valuables so I do not want to drill a hole in the front of it. I do however have a vehicle title in it that I have listed for sale and I tried to open it the other day it did not open. My safes Combination is 26-5-95. I have had people tell me that there is no way that could be the combination. That the last number is too close to 87 for it to leave the factory with that combination. I could have wrote the number backwards since the combination to my hidden safe I do have saved in my phone backwards so if anyone found it they would probably not try it backwards. But I have tried each number in each spot. I have tried every combination with a few numbers on each side for hours. I have a mechanics ear stethoscope that I have listened to the lock and I definitely hear ticks at 87, 95-97, 5-7, and sometimes hear a tick around 48. I do not ever really hear a tick around the 26 number.

Anyone have any ideas of where I should start with trying to figure this lock out?

when I continuously turn the lock to the left (counter clockwise) I hear a tick around 97 and 7 and 48

I believe the lock is mounted VD. The 95 is usually the last number turned to the right until it stops and then turn handle to open. The opening sequence is 4L-3R-2L-R to stop......usually 95.

I think the lock I have is supposed to stop on 87.
I had tech support helping me from liberty and they had me turn it to 87 each time after the combination was done.

Did it dead-stop at 87?

It does not stop at 87 or any number.

I do not ever remember it having a dead stop when it did work. Maybe it would have dead stopped before but I was turning the handle as it stopped.

If I cannot find my paperwork from liberty with the combination to make sure which way it is then tomorrow I will fill out the paperwork to them to get the combination , but still looking for ideas because I’m 99.9 % sure I have the right combination.

Considering you have a key lock on your dial it is most likely not a direct drive safe. That being said your last number is likely incorrect, as 95 would be in what's called the forbidden zone. Long story short it wouldn't work, or is in very close proximity to where it wouldn't work and is highly unlikely a combo set by the factory.

Liberty has S&G make them locking dial 6730s like that. Liberty probably made the safe for Harley Davidson.

Yes, I was using the fact that it is a key locking dial to eliminate direct entry. Which means his last number of 95 is really unlikely.

It's most likely a 6741. Wafer lock in the dial prevent's rotation.

It does have the key lock that will keep the dial from turning. There is just enough play for the key lock that I could turn it to 100 to lock the dial where I could pull the key out and no one be able to turn the dial but the handle would open and close the safe. So I did not use the combination very much trying to open and close it.

I just sent the paper work to liberty to Make sure I have the right combination and I will update on here in a day or two when they send it if it works or if I still need help

You need to call a safe tech to come open it for you especially if you've set one of the numbers in the dead zone.

Ok, I’m in. The combination I was trying was wrong. Not sure why but one of my numbers I had wrote down was wrong. Now I’m almost bummed that I have the combination because I like a challenge. I wish people in here would have told me not to get the combination till I have too( I needed a title out of it so I was in a hurry.) some things for future reference. With the mechanics ear stethoscope I could hear definitely that there were tics at 97-7-48 and not at 26 that I thought was one of the numbers. I figured when I heard the tics it was probably 1-2 numbers on either side of hearing the tick. Each actual number was 2 numbers to the left of the tick. I guess I should have set up a chart starting with the tick and doing combination on each side of the tick a few numbers in different orders. If I would have went with my tic numbers I would have been in it within an hour of trial and error. Now I’m hooked and want to try it again to see if I can crack it.

I don't know why you should hear something consistently at 48. Perhaps there is some defect on the drive cam. The ticks at 97 and 7 are due to the lock mechanism and have nothing to do with your numbers. There are some public books about manipulation. Have a look and if you are interested get a new (or used) lock and mount it on a sheet of steel or a wooden board for playing. I think that is more appropriate for starting.
