S&G 6804

I got this S&G 6804 key operated safe lock at the same time as the La Gard 2200 that I posted about earlier. I mounted it up earlier today and took some pics.

This time I made the mount tall enough to have a cup hook for the keys.

One thing that I don't like about it is that the cover plate cannot be accessed while the lock is mounted. The back of the lock exposes the change nut which can be loosened when the bolt is retracted using a hex key. Then you simply insert a new key, turn and tighten the nut. This user changeable key system is really ingenious but has been around for a long time.

As you can see in the pic, the levers are all the same size. This is because the stumps for each lever are raised to the height set by the key when the change nut is loose. You can also see the anti-pick notches.

Here is the key bitting. Nothing special here - standard lever. It shouldn't be too challenging to pick. I will grind off a key blank to use as a tensioner and then fashion some wires to lift the levers.

Hope you enjoyed the pics.

Nifty lock there man. That is one seriously long key, heh. I guess the leverpack winds up pretty far back eh?

Re: S&G 6804

Thanks for your comment. It is a long key. I guess they are normally used in vault doors. You can get a three inch key but for some reason this one came with the long one. I just ordered some short key blanks from ebay to make into picking tools. I'll grind off everything except the bolt tensioner and cut a groove through the center of the key to hold the wire in place. I might attach a tension handle to the back of the key but will probably get lazy and just put a piece of metal through the key ring hole.
