La Gard 2200

I got this La Gard 2200 key operated safe lock from LM a while ago and just took the time to hastily mount it and setup a new key. It is a pretty unique lock with user changeable keys. You need a setup key to get going which didn't come with the lock. It cost an extra $12. I tried just lining up the wheels myself to avoid having to use the setup key but couldn't get it to work.

The escutcheon has an index on it for changing the keys (just like a change index on a dial safe):

This is the setup key's change index lined up on the escutcheon:

Insert the change key on the back and turn it about 90 degrees:

Remove the setup key, insert the operator key and turn clockwise until it stops. Then remove the change key and the new operator key is set. Here is a pic of the bitting:

I think this is a pretty cool lock. I'd like to work on picking it but I can't see how to get started. There are a couple of commercial picks for it but it isn't clear how they work. They look like long disc detainer picks but I don't think that would work well on a lock like this because there won't be any feedback when the wheels are turned.

Hope you like the pics and enjoy the rest of your weekend.

Re: La Gard 2200

Very cool lock, thanks for the pictures. The only thing I don't like about them is the key is so BIG!! I bet most people that have these installed on a safe at the office just hide the key in a desk or file cabinet, no way they are sticking the key in their pocket, it might kill em!!!!

Thanks for the comments.

@kokomo - they will probably hide it under their keyboards where the passwords to the core banking systems are. Nothing to be concerned about.
