Illinois Lock Co. - DUO cylinder

So I decided to spend some time with this lock tonight. It's a high security DUO wafer lock made by Illinois Lock Co. It provides a nice challenge. The side wafers weren't nearly as much of a problem as I had expected as they were easily managed by using a diamond pick and rotating the pick (as if it were a dimple lock sort of) onto the wafers.

If you're looking for a fun cylinder, go on to ebay and pick one of these up.

There are loads of information and pictures here: http://lockwiki.com/index.php/Duo

i'm with LSA on this one for sure...great fun. i am however amazed that these lock are still considered somewhat hi-security,
(obviously...i see them around my town on vending machines and they were installed on the city bus coin counters..go figger...)

Re: Illinois Lock Co. - DUO cylinder

lol i quit trying to base "hi security" status on the locks difficulty and solely bas it on having more than one sheer line or more than one method of security, i would say that since it has those second style wafers that interact with the ward on the key instead of the bitting... id call it hi sec... even tho its a fairly easy pick... joe blo with a ball or wafer jiggler wont open it...

Re: Illinois Lock Co. - DUO cylinder

They're considered high security by many because of their distinction between normal (see: terrible) wafer locks as well as their UL 437 certification. Though UL 437 isn't a high security standard, there are relatively few lock models sold in the USA that have the certification which makes the Duo somewhat distinct.

Also, for trivia: probably my least favorite lock to re-assemble.
