The sidebar in the sidebar groove in the cylinder housing.

These next two pictures are with the sidebar resting on top of incorrectly set discs.

This lock is a pain to put back together, so I took a few pictures of the process.
First I put the plug in this separate cut out cylinder.
Image

Then I put the discs in the lock and turn it to this position.
Image

Then painstakingly I compress and put in each spring.
Image

Then I put the key into the lock. And hold the discs down while I turn it just enough put the sidebar in place.
Image

Then key up the rest of the pins.
Image

I slide the cylinder vertically to help prevent all the pins from falling out. I also have to keep my finger on the sidebar the entire time to prevent any of the discs from springing out.

And vertically slide it into the lock housing.

Great Job on the dimple lock. Have you worked on picking it yet? Do you think your design would hold up ok on a door for years being used every day?

Re: Custom home brew dimple lock (with sidebar)

I think it would hold up under regular use. It could probably use a little refinement on the springs and the way they are held in.

For picking, I've only spent maybe 15 minutes on it. And I didn't get it picked, so that's a good sign.

I do think that it would be possible to force the sidebar portion of the lock. I'm not sure how much force it would take to do it. But combined with the regular pin chambers that shouldn't be a problem.

I don't think you are missing much from a lack of closeup though. But sorry about that.

We have a dimple key machine, I used that and free handed the cuts.

I also used a track key duplicator to put the disc cuts in the bottom side of the key. I also used the track key duplicator with that separate lock housing to get the grooves into the cylinder for the discs. I did that by clamping the bible into the key jaw, then locking in the X, Y axis's. Then lowering the cutter to the depth I want, lock in the Z axis. And slowly turn the cylinder to make those deep cuts (I took several passes, not just one deep one  )

The sidebar groove in the housing was done by hand with the back side of a pippin file.
