Diebold 177 woes

So my Diebold 177 came in today. Was super excited to get it into action. Opened up the back and noticed that the wheels gates are already aligned under the lever fence, and the nose has dropped into the drive cam gate (yeah!) However, the drive cam won't retract the bolt (!?)

Does anyone have an idea of what is going on? I have a video of this if people would find this useful. Apologies in advance if this is something incredible simple/stupid -- this is my first combo lock.

Does it have a relocker that activates when the case back is off? Try to add a picture if you can.

First thought, put the back cover back on as it probably holds an internal relocker in place.

Edit: I'm too slow.

Check for a relocker. If the cover is off, the lock won't open without the relocker depressed. It would be at the bottom right of the lock case...look for something that you can push in as if the cover was on and try that.

Latest tale of woe...

When turning the wheels continuously clockwise (AWR), the spindle threads tighter and tighter until the the dial screws very firmly on the dial ring and won't go further.

Is this simply a spline key issue (i.e. I need to gently hammer it down more?) I suspect this is the case but just wanted some confirmation before I went nuts on the thing.

Not sure what's causing your problem with the dial tightening. If the spline key is in, then the dial can't tighten or loosen.. If it's only tight at specific points on the dial, like between 25-50 and smooth(er) everywhere else. Then the dial ring probably isn't aligned straight with the lock. If the spline key is dragging on the back casing, that could cause a similar issue. But the only time the spindle should be able to thread tighter or looser is during assembly before the spline key is used. Again once the spline key is used the dial cannot tighten or loosen.

It sounds like your spline key isn't installed, or fell out. I would take the back off and see if the spline key is installed. If it is, when you turn the dial, the drive cam should turn with it. If you have pictures, that might help.

Spline key is still firmly in place. I also tried installing the spline key with the flag facing the spindle (as in a prior thread on Diebolds) and the same thing happens, the dial progressively tightens as it turns CW. The dial loosens up again when I turn CCW, but never enough that the dial becomes loose from the ring. Otherwise, the dial is well seated within the ring and doesn't catch at any specific number.

Weird, I know.

I looks to me like your spindle is WAY too short, or your lock is mounted on too thick of a material. Your spindle should be basically flush with the outside edge of the drive cam. It's okay if it isn't completely flush, but yours is far too deep in the lock body. Your spline key isn't really engaging the spindle and drive cam properly and will slip.

Take a look at this picture. Your spindle should be in a position relative to the drive cam similar to this one.

You probably need to mount your lock on a thinner piece of wood.

Mike, it actually isnt mounted to anything in his pictures yet. You can see the back of the dial ring.

nsquidc, is there a gap between or is it right tight against the lock case? Is that how you got it or did you cut it yourself?

It actually is mounted, 1/2 inch plexiglass.

Still confused...
