Ultimate gift wrap!! Pics!

Thought you might get a kick out of this. My poor wife has been subjected to countless hours of me babbling about locks. She has set at least 100 combos by now, and even lurks around this forum periodically as JRoe. She’s tried her hand at manipulation a total of three times, with two successful opens—one on an S&G 6741 and one on a 6730. Meanwhile, when I started out, I had like a 10% success rate. Annoying, right? Anyway, payback is a bitch…

I didn’t want it to be too difficult, especially since family will be loitering around and she’s out of practice. I tried a few lock bodies and flipped W2 and W3 around until I was satisfied that the lock read pretty nicely. She’s a meticulous grapher and that will help on this lock to be sure...

I really liked the looks of this S&G dial—it has a solid, heavy feel.

I had to build it in the garage while she was visiting her mother. I had about 5 hours to do it. The body is ½ in birch ply, the door is ¾ in #2 pine. I primed with a rattle can of Zinser 1-2-3 (my favorite primer), and, to save time, I suspended the components and shot them with an airless sprayer that I bought when we remodeled our house last year. If you’ve never tried shooting paint with an airless, it will change your life. One coat, perfect results, every time (as long as you keep the gun moving and avoid drips!) I used the interior grade Behr premium plus from Home Depot. Not my favorite paint to brush or roll, but lays out nice out of the gun.

Merry Xmas everyone! And good luck, JRoe…because I’m not helping….

That looks like a real safe! very nice craftsmanship. I have the same metal dial on a practice stand, it's very beefy and looks great on your safe.

Re: Ultimate gift wrap!! Pics!

Thanks for the comments, everyone. She has decided not to start graphing until Xmas morning. I think she should start Xmas Eve and at least nail down a couple numbers.

I'll post pics and graphs when/if she opens it!

You really should put a warning in the title so Oldfast doesn't break his jeans.

That is really a great piece of work awesome.
Best practice lock stand ever!

I really like that spy proof dial also, has a nice heavy feel to it.
That will be a super surprise for her.

Re: Ultimate gift wrap!! Pics!

I've always wanted to make something similar, but never actually did. Great fucking job!
Now I'll look for "airless painting" since I've never heard of that... OK I found an interesting reading, thanks for the suggestion.

Cheers :)
