s&g 6730-a - nose doesn't touch cam

Hi,
I've tried searching for 6730-A but can't seem to find this information...
I got a 6730-A which does what I think an "ideal" safe combination lock should do but makes it difficult/impossible? for me to try to crack it.
The nose does not touch the cam. Is this a "new" design feature? The lock was made in 2020.

If I set the combination and then enter it the lock functions as it should but when trying to use the typical method of figuring out the combination it is impossible because the nose comes really really close to the cam but doesn't touch it.
I got the lock used on eBay so I don't know if this lock was modified by someone, is broken (in a good way) or if this is a design feature.

If I enter two numbers of the combination correctly I can get the nose to drop down low enough to just barely make contact that can be felt but any correct number alone does not.
I doubt you could fit a business card thickness in the gap between the nose and the cam but there IS a gap unless you have a couple correct numbers already dialed in.

Any ideas?

OK. So, what is holding the nose/fence off of the drive cam?

Here's a picture. You tell me.

I'd say either:

1) The nose is short.
2) The bottom of the fence is a little thicker (goes down lower) so it touches the wheels sooner which effectively raises the nose.
3) The cam is machined to make it slightly smaller so the nose can't reach it.
4) Hard way to do it - all the wheels are a little taller than they normally are so they engage the fence before the nose drops down enough to feel anything.

Either of the above 4 things would accomplish the same thing.

The fence IS touching the wheels. It's just that the nose isn't reaching the cam.

I don't understand why that hasn't been done before, actually.

Because it would be very easy to find the combination of a lock like this. Just a few turns and you have all the gates position...

Cheers :)

Is it a used lock? Can you see if the lever fence is bent downwards?

Yes, it is used and yes, it is bent down.
I would have thought it would be easier to straighten but it is not.
Surprisingly (and contrary to the post above yours) I can't feel when the fence rides across any of the gates.
I think the previous poster's view is that it would "catch" and you'd be able to figure out the 3 numbers easily but that is not the case.

By the way, hi again "Martin".
I don't know if you recognize my name on here but I'm the person who put a thicker four number LaGard lock in an on Diebold safe and had to modify the back cover and make my own pin in order to get the relocker to work because of the extra thickness.

Make four turns right and stop at 0. Start going left and take note of what you feel. You should feel at least one gate in four left turns. That's the first number of the combination.
Let me know if this works, and if you want me to continue or you're just looking to fix your lock.

Cheers :)

I don't recognize your name, but I had a look at your safe and I recognized that. :)

You can possibly not feel a gate, because there is shadowing happening. Not sure if it makes still sense to try this after some bending, but: What is happening with a AWL when you turn after each AWL step the dial right for nearly 2 turns? Is there one point where either the nose does touch the drive cam or a gate is catching the fence?

Re: s&g 6730-a - nose doesn't touch cam

Because this is a 6730 I think maybe the torque adjuster interferes with being able to feel anything. I've gone both AWL/R and went very slowly over the known combination gates and there was zero indication that there was anything "special" about those points.
I wound up bending it straight by putting the fence in a vice and carefully prying on the lever. It functions as a normal lock now so I can't try anything else. I think it was impossible to tell when it was over a gate in the previous state of the bent fence with the combination I had set.
Maybe a different combination would have revealed some gates.

Femurat:
If one of the other wheels was taller when passing over each of the gates there's nothing to feel.
I'm sure there are some combinations where you'd feel a gate but not with the combination I had set.

If you had systematically quartered each wheel, you would likely have been able to feel a gate at some point.

Re: s&g 6730-a - nose doesn't touch cam

My theory is that, if the lever fence is so bent that the nose doesn't touch the cam, the only wheel that it touches is wheel #1.
Of course mine is only a theory. You have the lock in your hands, I believe that you did not feel anything.

Cheers :)
