"Old" Diebold safe relocker question

Hi,

I recently got an old Diebold "security chest" and have a question about the relocker.
You guys are probably familiar with how this kind of door works but I'll explain it anyway.
When the bolt (not pictured) is retracted you can swing the handle up which rotates the inner workings of the door. This allows the "tabs" in the door to line up with the "slots" in the body so the door can be pulled forward.
If the bolt (or relocker) is not retracted then the back of the door can't be rotated because either the bolt or relocker bind in the slot preventing the back of the door from rotating enough in order to enable the door to be pulled forward.
Now that that's out of the way...
The relocker is circled in green as well as where it would engage on the safe. Circled in red is the spot where the "normal" bolt engages although from that angle you can't see the slot but that's unimporant for my question. There is a spring behind the relocker bolt which wants to push the bolt outward to engage it. The only thing keeping the bolt in place is a pin in the back of the grey cover which points towards the front of the door and goes into the relocker bolt. I drew the pin in yellow. The pin on the back cover pushes into the bolt which keeps the spring from pushing the bolt outward. The back cover is held on with two screws. If you remove the screws and pull the cover off then the relocker bolt will pushed out by the spring.

My question: What's the point? I can't see any (logical) method of attack that would get the relocker to fire since the back cover is screwed into place. If someone drilled a hole from the outside the screws would hold the cover in place enough for the drill to go through the cover. The only way I could see the relocker firing is if someone drilled a hole in exactly the right spot and then tried to use a punch in that hole to dent the back cover enough to push the pin out.
Why someone would even try to do that is beyond me.

Isn't this relocker kind of pointless?

My guess is this would be for a punch attempt. Knock the dial off and strike the shaft and or use a hardened shaft to punch the shaft through the back of the lock. This leaves an access hole to the bolt mechanism without having to drill.

That makes sense.
I was thinking precision elegant attack and you come up with bash the lock w/ a hammer until it falls out.
I'm obviously not a safecracker.
