My new old BAUCHE safe

Today I bought an old BAUCHE safe at an antique shop. It was not cheap but I haven't seen another one like it. I've seen combo locks like this in a book or website but never in person. It works like a charm and has the two original keys.

Cheers :)

Re: My new old BAUCHE safe

That is a great find never see one of those before either. So how does the 4 keyways work with those 2 keys? Unlock top and bottom on the left first with one key then the right side top then bottom with the other? Was surprised to see 4 keyways and that type of keys.

Re: My new old BAUCHE safe

I should have taken the picture with the key tab open too.

It has a combination lock on the right, you turn each dial with the key, but also a screwdriver would work, counterclockwise until it stops. That's the zero. Then count the clicks going clockwise to compose the four digits combo. Then you can use the key, under the golden left tab.

Cheers :)

Re: My new old BAUCHE safe

Wow that is cool you know I love click combination locks. I didn't expect to hear that is how this works. Yes do take a picture of the real keyway and key,. How big is this safe looks small but that makes a nice vintage display collectable and don't take up too much room. Nice you got 2 of the keys that turn the click locks also. I was concerned about the wear on them until you said a screwdriver would work also. Did you get 2 keys that work the real keyed lock too? Like the key covers very different.

Re: My new old BAUCHE safe

I haven't measured it but the safe is approximately 35x35x50 cm.
Each one of the two keys you see can be used to set the four numbers of the combination and then to open the keyed lock. So you actually need just one key.
The keyhole covers were what draw my attention to this particular safe.

Cheers :)

So while I wait to have time to move it into the house and disassemble the lock, I went ahead and measured the safe. It's 43 cm wide, 29 cm deep and 26 cm high. I put it on my bathroom scale and I thought it may break it! It didn't. It was not easy to see the indicator but seemed between 60 and 65 kg.

Enjoy a few more pictures

My knowledge of safes is pretty lacking, but with that being said I really like it. the plates covering the key slots is awesome. Thanks for the share.

Finally I had time to dig out the safe from the garage. Here I am dialling it open for the last time before disassembling it. Now the locks are on my work bench and the body is at a car body shop. I got quoted 250 euro to get it sanded, primed and painted medium grey.
I'll disassemble and clean the locks myself, but decided to leave the paint job to a professional.

I'll fix the missing pictures on this thread later next week and add the new ones. For now this small video is all I can show you.

Cheers :)

Re: My new old BAUCHE safe

That is indeed very heavy. If you disassemble it, I would be interested not only in the locks, but all the bolt mechanics.

Re: My new old BAUCHE safe

Can't wait to see it painted. Were they originally solid color or did they have some art work on them too? It will be begging for some gold leaf. (hint hint)

I see your pictures are still on antique-locks. I took the liberty to move one here. Hope you don't mind.

Re: My new old BAUCHE safe

Thanks to the help of our kind moderator Riyame I was able to fix the pictures in the old posts of this thread. So now you can see them again.

Martin, there isn't much boltwork. Everything is inside that small box attached to the back of the door. The bolt you see on the left of the door is the only thing that prevents the door from opening. There are no other bolts on the top, bottom or right side of the door. But of course I'll try to show you as much as I can of the inside.

00247, thanks for posting that picture for me. Not only you gave something to look at before I fixed the pictures. You also reminded me of that thread that is missing the latest video update. I'll add it.

Cheers :)
