I ran into the exact same problem this weekend!

I got a NOS 8077AB (dated 1989). I went through a practice run of changing the lock before I actually did it. I tried to open the shackle without turning the key-hole screw closed. The shackle would not open unless I closed the key-hole screw. It occurred to me that maybe you were having the same problem. Later, I changed the combination for real and it was a success.

Between the 8077 and 8088, I sort of like the 8088 better. It has a larger dial with much more visible and clear numbers. I think the bright chrome makes it more difficult to read. The 8088 also has a tighter fitting and smooth dial than the 8077. I have two more from NOS from 2015 coming so then I can compare.

Oh, I see. Viewing on a laptop screen I found some frames at 6:24-6:25 where the "8077AB" and "1989" on the back cover are clear.

Is there some way too make my 8077 easier to open. I'm really glad we got it working now if it would just open without shaking it up and down. The way it is I wouldn't use it.. I've worked it everyday 2 to 4 times and it still is hard to open it. Thanks

I have several of these, and 8088s too. It's not unusual for some to require a good yank or two to open. If yours is excessive, maybe that would explain why it was unused. Try playing around with dialing numbers 1/2 higher or lower. It's possible that gate/indices tolerances may cause this problem for some locks, since the designed dialing tolerances on these are so tight. On a stubborn lock I often find the gate off center from where I set it, so I shift the number when setting the combination in hopes of centering the gate better when dialing to open. The increment of shift possible is limited by the locking notches on the wheels though.
