Re: Help S&G 8077

It is not that bad for the cover if the lock is unlocked. Closed it is a problem.

Have you tried to set it to the default combination of 4L25 R0?

Yes I've tried it. Every set of numbers I've tried would change it wouldn't open so I had to use the numbers and line them at the change index so I can use the key. That's my dilemma I can change the combo and when I've tried to open nothing. So I had to line them at the change index so I could insert change key... I've googled it and I've search and search. I still believe I can get the help I need here...

Sometimes things are just borken, but I don't see, why this should be in your case.

Do you push the lock into the cover, so that it is very clear where the indexes are pointing to?

Have you tried to set the default combination and then test 20, 21, 22, 23, 24, 25, 26, ...?

I do push it into the case to view it better. When I get back home I will set it to default 4L25 R0 and then try this out. Thanks again

This is a REALLY GOOD IDEA! Definitely try this.

By the way, you do dial back to zero when setting the combination for an 8077. I forgot, and thought we were dealing with an 8088, in which case the instructions do not say to dial back to zero. In either case, I'm not sure what difference it should make, unless something in the design of the 8077 makes it necessary.

I was including 0 and then I was asked why so I stopped I'm going to try the default number and add the 0

No idea, why there should be the 0 at the end for the change. Maybe it is there to not confuse people.

Re: Help S&G 8077

STOP! If you saw the post I had here, don't follow it just yet.

What model is your 8077? (8077, 8077A, 8077AB, 8077AC, or 8077AD)

I have confirmed you do NOT have to dial back to zero to set the combination. BUT, you DO have to have the dial at zero to close the changing door. So, dial the zero any way, just like they say to do.

Now, are you ready for this? (You're not going to like it!) You HAVE TO HAVE THE CHANGING DOOR CLOSED FOR THE SHACKLE TO OPEN! You're on your own once you close that door, but you'll never be able to open the lock if you don't close the door. Once the door is closed, all bets are off if your combination does not work! That is why they ask that you redial the new combination to the changing index a second time and see that the key will reinsert all the way through the wheels (but don't turn it), confirming your combination was set correctly, before closing the door. Kind of like when you set a new password you have to enter it twice to verify you didn't make an error. Good luck!

I'm going to look into that about the door being closed. I mean that would solved the reason why I never was able to open it just change the numbers

Look at my post above! Don't do anything yet. I need to know what model number your 8077 is.

8077AB

O.K. The model in Squelchtone's video was also an 8077AB (1989), and he WAS able to open the shackle with the change key door open. I've confirmed on two of my 8077AD (2019) that the shackle cannot be opened while the door is open.

I'm not sure where that leaves us. According to the video you should be able to open the shackle with the door opened on an 8077AB. But, apparently, some versions of some models (at least the two 8077ADs I have here at the moment) prevent it. If you choose to close the door, you're on your own. I can't guarantee a positive result. Maybe you could give Sargent & Greenleaf a call Monday morning about this.

Re: Help S&G 8077

I really thought that was the reason why it won't let me open it.
I feel it has to be some stupid thing like that. I mean it changes every time and something is holding it

Re: Help S&G 8077

I would still try MartinHewitt's idea first of setting to a single number and testing opening around the dial.
