I was told this is a spline key. I have my doubts. Has anyone seen one like this? Steel, and toothed along both edges. I seem to recall years ago using tacks like this for something. Ideas?

It is almost identical, if not identical to spline keys I have for Chubb Manifoil MkIV combination locks.

Lost spline keys are sometimes replaced by hand filed keys.

This would appear to be a manually manufactured key for a lost or broken item
where a replacement was not immediately available for the device in question.

The serrations at the lower end of the spline are meant to keep it from
backing out of the keyway.

Attached a lock guide for S&G Below.

I'm thinking "tent stake". Unless it's wooden. Then, of course, vampire vanquishing "through the heart" stake.

We've found a cheap source for spline keys, finally!

Cheers :)

You mean, like in case you need to mount an army of locks?

Well, I was thinking more like for those oddities. Of course the serrated portion would be cut off. Beyond that, a lot would depend on the exact dimensions of it (thickness especially). But it would certainly beat making them from a bar of brass stock as I've done in the past sometimes.

I wouldn't use a steel key in brass keyways, but that's just me. The thickness of this is .062".

Well the thickness isn't too bad then. Could work.

Though you may have a point about steel vs. brass.
You'd have to be cautious about the fit I suppose.

Thanks for the measurement Terry

I wouldn't use steel and brass together. Both for galvanic corrosion and different thermal dilatation problems. It was just a joke.

Cheers :)
