Re: Is This A Spline Key??

There are a lot of metal mixes in locks, e.g. the brass/zamak wheels in La Gard locks. I have also an old German combination lock which came with its original steel spline key. Nonetheless I also feel more comfortable with a brass spline key.
In case you wonder ... Martin Hewitt is a fictional detective in stories by Arthur Morrison:

The head of a steel spline key would be less apt to break, as brass spline keys are prone to do. But, I would be concerned with a steel key wearing and/or enlarging a keyway to the point that it is no longer tight.

I have since learned that the Big Red safe locks use stainless steel spline keys.
