Chubb combination lock fail

Here is my fail today. I thought It best to post the fails as well as the successes so we can all join the learning curve.
I mounted up this Chubb 3 wheel combination lock, got it running smooth, thought im good to go.
However after an hour of graphing, and getting no where I thought "time to cheat a little"/ "speed up the learning curve" (deleate as appropriate) and take the back off to check my readings and contact points. All was as I had graphed.

So I put in the change key, set it to 20. 30. 40. and tried again. Even with a helping hand of setting 2 wheels in the right place. The contact points on the cam wheel were still reading the same.
I guess this Chubbs too well made to manipulate. Any one here opened one.?

I suppose I will wait for a class 2 S&G liberty to arrive off ebay and try again.

Do you perhaps have photos from the inside?

Heres the inside, with the lever nose just at right contact point. It stayed at 55 on the dial, and didnt budge even when 2 of the wheels were at the proper gate, under the fence.

You could try more sensitive mechanisms like a Vernier scale or a laser pointer.

I think I will start at a cheaper lock.

Re: Chubb combination lock fail

If this would be your first, then yes, a different lock would be better.

Re: Chubb combination lock fail

Not much help as I've never encountered one.
But I've heard Chubbs can be rather difficult.

Not a bad idea. And you have a beautiful lock here you can always come back to.

If you're really determined to see if you can at least get some
fluctuations from this lock, you could try a few configurations:

1&2 @ gates... 3 around
2&3 @ gates... 1 around
1&3 @ gates... 2 around

Naturally you'll have to skip over the gate to avoid the fence dropping in,
but it seems like you should see some fluctuation at some point with that.

Re: Chubb combination lock fail

Ive a cheaper lock on the way via ebay. I think Id bitten off more than I could chew starting with a Chubb combination lock. Chubb is (was) the best lock manufactures for a reason.

For guys that have spun and manipulated a safe comination lock. Without going to absolute poor quality safe combination locks. What would you reccomend as a starter lock
to learn the ropes.

Or is dialing/decoding, really down to a quarter of a graduation between numbers on a dial.?

I'd say the S&G you're currently waiting on should be a great start.

Thanks all. I will try again later in the week with a new perspective. (less beer)

I would recommend starting with S&G, and then move onto LaGard, Diebold, Mosler, Yale & others. Where that Chubb fits in relation to the others, I do not know.

Even with a S&G, you aren't likely to see individual changes in readings larger than than 1/4 of an increment. Some locks will have indications of only 1/8th of an increment.

Black cased Chubb can be done but certainly not a lock I would suggest for learning on.

Re: Chubb combination lock fail

Heres my latest lock to hit the post from America. Almost mounted up and ready to go. Already its loud and clear on the contact points,by touch and sound. Were as the chubb I needed a pizo mic run through a guitar practice amp to hear where I was.

Re: Chubb combination lock fail

Halve an hour I considered asking you if it has already arrived ...

Your description sounds like it should be good for starting. Does it look like a redecorated S&G lock?
