Horizon in-floor

Last July I sold the Horizon safe at a car show/swap meet. The buyer said it would be installed in his heated garage. A few weeks ago he called me and said he was have trouble opening it. Said it takes 2-3 attempts to open it. He also stated it was not in his heated garage but in another unheated out building. I had always kept it in an unheated garage and would open it several times a week with no problems. Anyone else in cold-climate states that has had this happen with a combo lock?

First of all ... The lock really doesn't look like a LG 3330. More like a SG 6730 with delrin wheels if such thing exists.

Regarding the reason for this trouble ... Maybe the dial ring is moving? Maybe a wheel clutch has shifted? If one dial is slightly off opening can depend on someone dialing a 38.5 or 39.5 instead of a 39.

Interesting, the only changes from when the safe was working fine is the location, temperature and operator. I would try to rule out operator error first.
Maybe in the morning when its cooler it opens and in the afternoon it doesn't? Wearing gloves while dialing? Did the safe get a lube that freezes? So many things it could be?

Ya really shouldn't rule anything out. But in my limited experience,
I've never seen temperature affect a lock. And nearly all my work is
done in frigid to freezing temps. Should be noted though; I've never
run into a lock in the field that had delrin wheels either. *shrugs*

Couple things though: 1. No doubt it left your hands in good working order.
2. If he installed it relatively soon after purchase - then the lock has been
working fine for 5 or 6 months - the last two of which were in cold temps.

Again, I wouldn't rule anything out, but personally I'd be looking more toward
the user or the lock. When you arrive have him open it for you and watch him
closely... how's he treating it? After that, hopefully some dialing diagnostics
will narrow down the exact problem.

Yes, the last pic shows a 6730. That was put in by mistake. The 6730 was replaced by the LaGard 3330. I quadrupled checked it and it worked flawlessly, even in cold weather while I had it.

The fact you say it worked flawlessly, makes me lean towards the new owner has done or is doing something that may be causing the issue. But, unless you open it up, we could guess all day and still be wrong. Maybe be condensation, then freezing.? What are the symptoms? Will the new owner be bringing you the safe to look at? Was it sold AS-IS or with a warranty. I find most safes to be very reliable. Maybe the new owner has filled it full of water and is storing his Prize Gold fish inside? Floor safe...installed in concrete...full of concrete? Loose spline key?
