Got two old S&G locks in the 6700 series to start my manipulation excercises. The drive cams are quite different, as you can see the play of the nose in the cam gate will be much larger in one of them. The cam with the large cam gate was just marked Grouo 2, but the other one was marked 6730.

I wonder if the lock with the wide cam gate is another model, or if the cam has been modified?

I can tell you that it has not been modified. It is indeed designed that way.

Unfortunately, I cannot for the life of me(!) remember the reasoning for
the wider gate. I recall reading about it somewhere. Ahh! Hope someone
can weigh in on this! I wanna say it had something to do with 'day-locking'
but I really dunno. But again, it's not modified... it's designed that way.

reminds me of the cam on an 8500, minus the roller attached to it, which I just grabbed off the shelf to see what it does and other than letting you turn the dial more before it retracts the bolt, I have no idea why the gate is wider and cut like that on my 8500 or on your 67xx.

Good question. A wider cam gate allows the nose to drop even if you're turning the dial very fast!
That's the only thing that comes to mind right now.

Yes, the 8550 has such a wide gate, but its cam has only two slots for the spline key.

Hmm. I'll give it a couple more days before I bug 'em again. We'll see.

In the meantime, maybe I'll sift through some literature... see if I can't
find where I had read about this once. Wish my memory was better, lol.
If it were I would remember what I read, or at least where I read it.

Usually within the 6700 series, I've been running into a new drive cam with a much wider gate than the traditional one. I was really hoping you could educate me on this. Why it was introduced, the reasoning for it, when, what circumstances, and which models I should be using this style of cam with, etc.

Now I hate to get down on people or companies to quick, I really do.
But to honest, I'm sorely disappointed and rather unimpressed so far.
It took them 9 DAYS to get back with me. And this is the answer I get....

"What color is the drive cam?"

This fella hasn't a clue. I only hope that he gets up from his desk
to go find someone who does before he gets back with me again.

I've responded to the color question by attaching the very nice
comparison photo of the two drive cams that Deadbolt posted.

I've all but given up on an answer directly from S&G, but for what it's worth...

Someone said the cams with the wider gate were designed to be used
with the key-locking dials. But again, that's just something I heard.

It is my understanding that the wide gate was used in the 6741 lock because the 6741 has greater dialing tolerance. It is plus or minus 1.25 digits. Jim

All locks with silvery lever should have a wider dialing tolerance, but the plastic cam in the 6642 is normal. I believe the dialing tolerance is also not important for the cam. The lever falls in when it falls.
In the 8500 series locks is the wide cam gate. There it really makes sense as the gate has to be there when the lever is propelled down at 0. It would not be good when dial and lock are not aligned perfectly and the lever would hit the cam instead of the cam gate.
