Yes Jaakko, I'll be very careful when tightening them. I may use some flat brass stock instead of a screwdriver...

Cocolitos, very nice tool! You made it?
Do you have any other info about my safe? I was wondering if it's possible to find a picture of an original one. I'd like to see its decorations and color but I'm not very good at looking for French websites.

Cheers :)

I'll ask a French guy in the German forum.

I don't made it.
It's a brass made tool developed by a french company named INITIAL.

Your safe have a old key version (1900) but the lock is more recent (MONOPOLE 1927 small version).

How difficult is this lock to pick?

Cocolitos, you might consider making that patent drawing of the lock your avatar picture. It is a cool drawing. :)

Thank you for the information on the lock. Is it fairly common to have the old style key with a newer style lock?

Sure, old versions are diffult to pick even if you have special tool.
Especially if the door is thick, you have to keep the tool straight as possible.

In my opinion, They sell their stock of old steel blanks to produce more economic key.

Cocolitos, thank you very much for identifying the lock and for the nice drawing you found. I like it very much. I may try to pick it towards the end of the restoration process, that now unfortunately is paused.

Martin, any other info is welcome. Thanks.

Cheers :)

The safe body has been painted and is sitting on my work bench. It looks very nicely done to me. It's medium grey by Fiat number 653. I've been told its the colour of the old Fiat 500 Topolino.

I consider it my own Christmas present.

Cheers :)

Very nice! New paint always builds excitement to the completion of a project. Are you considering a stand to show it off when it is done?

Good work! Did you ask them about old paint?

Thanks. I was thinking to put it on wheels, like a strange coffee table, but is to small for that. A stand may be a good idea. Any suggestion?
A young guy sanded it completely and unfortunately didn't notice the original colour.

Cheers :)

Footstool? Or .... maybe .... use it as a safe?

I did search a bit. From what I found BAUCHE safes seem to have been painted in some kind of very dark gray or in dark green with perhaps a lighter frame with key hole covers etc. in dark silverish or goldish.

E.g. https://www.lesnouveauxbrocanteurs.com/ ... mmi182.htm

PS: This one is brown, but it might also be newer paint. https://www.france-troc.com/Troc_echang ... 84493.html

After a few years it's time to revive this old thread of mine. I thought I posted pictures of the finished safe but looks like I didn't. My bad.
I had the safe on the side of my workbench for a few years, and always wanted to make a stand for it. The safe is very heavy for its size, so it needs an adequate support. On wheels. I made a dozen projects and finally chose one that could fit three safes. I don't have many tools, so I had to come up with a project that didn't require special woodworking tools but solid and with strong joints.

I bought and cut some wood

Image

Glued together the two parts of the horizontal supports

Image

Glued the horizontal supports to the legs

Image

Sanded the finished assembly

Image

Screwed the three shelves

Image

Mounted the wheels

Image

And finally put it in place

Image

Here is a closeup of the finished stand. On the bottom shelf there's a nice Juwel safe. The middle shelf is temporary occupied by my toolbox. One day or another I may get another small safe...

And here is the main piece of my collection in all its glory

Cheers :)
