I sold a safe and they lost the combo

A couple years ago I purchased a couple safes at auction, cleaned them up and sold them.
They were almost a 1000 pounds and had S and G group 2M locks.

Just the other day one of the buyers called and said they lost the combo. I had reset it for them at the time but didn't keep the info, didn't want to.

They want in and the way I see it there are 2 options. Manipulate or drill and use a scope.

I understand the theory of manipulation but from what I read it is not something to learn on and this would be my first try...
I remember how this safe is put together and know where to drill.

The problem with drilling is the repair. The safe is built in and I don't own a welder. I have thought of using a few ball bearings and a threaded bolt but is that enough? The area I will drill has 1" plate.

I have checked the lock and all wheels are tight and repeatable, so nothing in the lock is wrong.

If anybody knows of repair options without the use of a welder that would be a big help.

A tapered steel pin from the front. Grind off flush with the door.

+1 for what bitbuster said.

Keedex part K-16 has these tapered pins as well as ball bearings to fill the drill hole if door is really thick and you want some extra future proof drill protection.

You may know where to drill - but is it standard steel or hardplate ??

Why not sub the job out to someone who can manipulate it ?

Checking to see that the wheels are "all there" is just one of many questions you can ask the lock before resorting to manipulation or drilling. Is the wheels locked properly, are the flys moving as they should, has the dial ring been shifted justa number or two and on an on. You can find pretty basic set of what-to-check things from "S&G Mechanical Safe Lock Guide".

Re: I sold a safe and they lost the combo

I checked the lock using book_mech_locks.pdf from s&g. The people really don't remember the combo, there has been no abuse trying to get in.

I'm willing to try manipulation but a 2M is a bit intimidating.

I have a friend in the recording industry and he offered me a guitar pickup to use along with a small amp. Thinking of taping it to the door. Worth $1K and don't want to break it and have to pay!

Where can I buy a good magnetic pickup and battery powered amp in Canada?

A guitar pickup will not work. These pickups work by creating a magnetic field and the metal strings upset this field when they vibrate in it. This is what is amplified.

You will need an electret mike.

The flat electret speakers that are used in "singing greeting cards" can be used as surface mounted mikes.

The guitar pickup could be a piezo as well, which should work fine, though.

What is the difference between the 6730 group 2 and the lock that is installed on the safe you are trying to open?
Is it a Sargent Greenleaf 6630 2M?

The lock is a 6642 group 2M. The wheels are not round, they have lots of false gates.
I want to try and manipulate but can't spend endless hours...

For some people S&G 2Ms are easier to open than the Group 2 locks. It is much more doable than a LaGard 2m.

They actually have just two gates and always at the same locations, so it just makes it easier to manipulate.
