Magnetic Manipulation

I'd like to discuss this at length if enough people are willing to share.

For better or worse, this is no secret. And it shouldn't be!! It's ridiculous if you
ask me that such a vulnerability would get by a manufacturer. Or maybe it didn't
get by 'em... maybe they were fully aware of it. Either way, I'm not at all surprised.

Most of you have surely seen this. I've actually had these videos saved in
my play list for some time now with the intention of thoroughly exploring it.

The ARTICLE by Tobias published earlier this year in Forbes Magazine.
And a couple videos HERE & HERE Maybe more that I'm not aware of?

Just how many safes are susceptible to this attack that you're aware of?
I'm speaking of models within the Sentry brand as well as other brands.
Better yet, lets get more specific..... exactly which brands/makes/models?

How many lbs of pull is actually necessary? I've been scanning Amazon for a couple of days now.
The 125 lb magnet in the video was said to be 'overkill'. I was thinking though of maybe attaching
a round slider disc (designed for moving furniture). This would provide some protection for the safe
and also make movement of the magnet easier. By attaching this, I'm sure to lose some of the pull
though... so I think I might go with a slightly stronger one to make up the difference.

Re: Magnetic Manipulation

Sparrows has a 96lb pull force magnet if anyone has one and this works with it that would give me enough reason to order one ;)

Re: Magnetic Manipulation

bitbuster... funny you mention that. While looking into these magnets, I ended up on a
bit of a kick watching vids on magnet fishing. I can definitely see why people enjoy it.

Also, it goes without saying, but be careful with these guys! We all like our fingers.

Re: Magnetic Manipulation

If you go to the Sentry Safe web site and enter your safe's serial number they will let you know if your safe is one of the units that are vulnerable.
Or maybe pull some serial numbers off of the models in question from store displays, and see what pops.?

It's a good magnet...but it doesn't work as advertised.

Re: Magnetic Manipulation

Did anyboy noticed that most of this sentry safe have only a + and a 1 cable from the dial to the solenoid?

with a little pry on the front panel and 2 sharp pointed metal can make magic on them :)

And another one, a customer wanted to know the factory pin for the safe ( you can change combo with it and so on..) because he bought it in locked condition.
Inside the keypad there is a small eprom what you can easily read with a cheap programmer and voila, pin is there :)
